ahead. Stan’s hand trembled on the control stick; he was sweating, but he wouldn’t turn back.

Side by side, the two craft hurtled toward earth. Slowly, Stan opened the climb valve. His patrol ship eased toward the Alioth. He could see the meteor pocks on the Alioth’s hull. If he tangled in that gash—

Carefully, he inched on full power. The SF-7 neared the freighter until mere yards separated them. It was hard to believe they were traveling at thousands of miles per hour. The optical illusion made them appear to hang in space.

He drew in oxygen, held it. The SF-7 bumped the Alioth. Stan rammed the throttle open the rest of its travel, glued the patrol ship against the freighter with acceleration and stuck there.

In a long arc, the two craft swerved off their downward course and angled across the earth’s surface. Then they paralleled. It had worked!

“Space Patrol to Alioth!” Stan shouted. “You’re orbiting. I’ll have a repair ship sent. Good luck.”

The captain’s voice was choked. “We don’t know how to thank you.”

“Roger, Alioth,” Stan grinned. He shifted to ground frequency.

“Heard it all,” Mason rapped. “You’re in that close.” There was a pause. “When you land, there’s a short course in understanding orders you ought to take.”

“Yes, sir,” Stan said.

“By the way, Hunter, Wheaton sends his congratulations.”

Stan leaned back. He was tired and happy.
